Usually, the IRS takes about eight to twelve months from receiving the Offer in Compromise to make their final determination. The average processing time is ten months.
In certain cases, it can take longer for the IRS to process an Offer in Compromise. The IRS usually request additional information, but more complicated cases can delay the process as they involve more information and more requests. A taxpayer who is slow in providing this information can also delay the process, not to mention open themselves to more aggressive collections activity, so it is important that requests for more information are satisfied in a timely manner.
However, collection activities are usually suspended while an Offer in Compromise is being process as long as we can demonstrate the offer is made in good faith.
